Here is a poem I found  that I thought might apply to some church music today.........

Deacon Jones' Grievance.

I' ve been watchin' of 'em, parson,
An' I 'm sorry fur to say
'At my mind is not contented
With the loose an' keerless way
'At the young folks treat the music;
'T ain't the proper sort o' choir.
Then I don't believe in Christuns
A-singin' hymns for hire.

But I never would 'a' murmured
An' the matter might 'a' gone
Ef it was n't fur the antics
'At I 've seen 'em kerry on;
So I thought it was my dooty
Fur to come to you an' ask
Ef you would n't sort o' gently
Take them singin' folks to task.

Fust, the music they 've be'n singin'
Will disgrace us mighty soon;
It 's a cross between a opry
An' a ol' cotillion tune.
With its dashes an' its quavers
An' its hifalutin style--
Why, it sets my head to swimmin'
When I 'm comin' down the aisle.

Now it might be almost decent
Ef it was n't fur the way
'At they git up there an' sing it,
Hey dum diddle, loud and gay.

Why, it shames the name o' sacred
In its brazen worldliness,
An' they 've even got "Ol' Hundred"
In a bold, new-fangled dress.

You 'll excuse me, Mr. Parson,
Ef I seem a little sore;
But I 've sung the songs of Isr'el
For threescore years an' more,
An' it sort o' hurts my feelin's
Fur to see 'em put away
Fur these harum-scarum ditties
'At is capturin' the day.

There 's anuther little happ'nin'
'At I 'll mention while I 'm here,
Jes' to show 'at my objections
All is offered sound and clear.
It was one day they was singin'
An' was doin' well enough--
Singin' good as people could sing
Sich an awful mess o' stuff--

When the choir give a holler,
An' the organ give a groan,
An' they left one weak-voiced feller
A-singin' there alone!
But he stuck right to the music,
Tho' 't was tryin' as could be;
An' when I tried to help him,
Why, the hull church scowled at me.

You say that 's so-low singin',
Well, I pray the Lord that I
Growed up when folks was willin'
To sing their hymns so high.
Why, we never had sich doin's
In the good ol' Bethel days,
When the folks was all contented
With the simple songs of praise.

Now I may have spoke too open,
But 't was too hard to keep still,
An' I hope you 'll tell the singers
'At I bear 'em no ill-will.

'At they all may git to glory
Is my wish an' my desire,
But they 'll need some extry trainin'
'Fore they jine the heavenly choir.

Wow! I can't believe it's already 2008! I had just gotten used to writing 2007, and now I have to reprogram my brain again! What happened to last year?
  • I left the teen years behind me. *sob*
  • I started attending services at the Dayton Gospel Mission.
  • I read through the Bible again.
  • I finished my first year and started my second year as a music major at Sinclair.
  • I took summer classes.
  • I started playing piano duets with a friend.
  • I switched theory professors and decided that I really like theory after all.
  • I switched voice teachers and decided I really like singing.
  • I learned that things aren't usually as bad as you imagine them to be.
  • I turned into an evil English teacher and made my sisters actually complete their compositions.
  • I got a facebook and pretty much abandoned Xanga.
  • I managed to "keep up" a journal-- if you don't count the three months that I couldn't find it because it was actually in its proper place.
  • I read my journal on New Year's Eve and wondered how in the world I could have been so naive a year ago. (And next New Year's Eve I will read my journal from this year and wonder how in the world I could have been so naive a year ago.)
  • I probably did lots of other things that I am forgetting right now!

I am really looking forward to Monday when school starts. YAAAAAYYYY!!!!! I'm excited. And scared. Scared because I have to take public speaking and math. There goes my GPA! I'm taking public speaking this quarter and math next quarter. When I asked my counselor if I could take a different communications class, she said, "Oh, you're a performer- you'll be fine." I felt like saying, "Firstly, I'm in music education, not performance. Secondly, I'm a pianist, not a speaker-- there's a big difference." But I didn't. I was a polite little mouse. And since I have to have that class to get a bachelor's degree anyway...
I'm getting nervous about my piano lesson on Tuesday. The pieces I am working on are impossible. I think the composers must have been sadistic or something! Anyway, hopefully Dr. Ruckman won't expect perfection already, 'cuz he ain't gettin' it- at least not yet! Hmm! I think I'd better go practice!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Currently Listening
Bernstein: Chichester Psalms

Happy Multiple Holidays!

Someone said that in theory last night. When he had left the room, Dr. Parcell looked at us and said, "That has got to be the most politically correct thing I have ever heard!" So that is my new Christmas greeting! Just kidding! I like "Happy Thanksgiving" and "Merry Christmas!" whether they're "politically correct" or not!
YAY!!!!!!!!! I have officially finished Fall Quarter 2007! This quarter was a bit hectic for me, since I was taking ten classes. If I ever try to take three choirs again that perform their concert on the same night, someone please knock me over the head or something. With rehearsals and performance, I was standing for 3 solid hours in my painful dress shoes. My feet still hurt!
I think this quarter has been one of the most challenging, but also one of the most fun. The music we've been working on (particularly Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms") is amazing. It's really hard, but it's also one of the best pieces I've ever heard. My piano pieces were also really great pieces. This was also my first quarter taking piano duet lessons with a friend, which was so much fun!
Another challenge was switching theory/ear training professors and getting used to new methods. I felt kind of like I was drowning at first, but I found my feet after a while. I'm really glad I'm in Dr. Parcell's classes though. It's so much fun. I was a bit indifferent about theory and ear training last year, but now I really love it!
I'm looking forward to my break, although almost two months without piano lessons seems an eternity! A few things that are on my list of things to do during my break- learn the four new pieces Dr. Ruckman gave me, plus polish my Beethoven concerto for next quarter; read at least two more classics from my list; finish making some Christmas presents; go to Trader's World with Aunt Rach and the cousins; work on writing a sonata for theory next quarter; get the house cleaned up; sleep!
Actually, now the break doesn't seem so long!
